Louis set up Star Actuarial in 2009 with Antony Buxton and leads a successful team that was recently awarded ”Actuarial Agency of the Year“ by the Actuarial Post for the fourth year running.

Biography

Louis graduated from Dundee University in 1999 with a 1st Class Masters Degree in Financial Economics. After graduating Louis worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers as a pensions and investment actuarial consultant before moving into actuarial recruitment with GAAPS in 2002. Louis quickly progressed to Head of UK Recruitment and was responsible for recruiting actuaries across the board in terms of level and field of work.

In 2009 Louis set up Star Actuarial Futures with Antony Buxton. Since then the company has grown from strength-to-strength to become one of the leading actuarial recruitment brands in the UK market.

Louis is a conference speaker on actuarial career development. Louis has been a committee member of SIAS and was also a long serving member of the Actuarial Profession's Momentum Conference organising committee which looks to fuel and energise those actuaries attending.

Antony is the joint founder and Managing Director of Star Actuarial Futures. He is a qualified actuary (FIA 2003) with technical experience in pensions and non-life insurance and experience of recruiting, developing and retaining high performing actuarial teams.

Antony now applies his detailed understanding of the actuarial market in the recruitment of high quality actuaries and actuarial students. In particular, he has enjoyed significant success working closely with clients to complete difficult mandates.

Biography

Antony graduated from Sheffield University in 1999 with a 1st Class Masters Degree in Mathematics.

He then joined PricewaterhouseCoopers' Human Resource Services team in Birmingham, where he qualified as an actuary in 2003, passing all of the actuarial exams first time. Antony provided corporate advice on pension scheme strategy, transaction support and audit support to a number of PwC's flagship clients. Antony also took on a wide range of management responsibilities. In particular, he was heavily involved in recruitment and induction, completing a Recruitment Interviewing Skills Course, performing interviews and planning and delivering business skills and technical training courses.

In 2005, Antony was the first actuary to join Legal & General's non-life insurance business in Birmingham and he played a significant part in the recruitment and development of the new actuarial team. Antony's role expanded during his period at L&G, and from 2008 onwards, as Head of Actuarial Services, he was responsible for reserving, capital modelling, reinsurance strategy and risk pricing.

In 2009, Antony and Louis Manson set up Star Actuarial Futures to provide recruitment consultancy services to the actuarial market. The company is now a market leader, working with a wide range of clients, having received a number of awards and accolades.

Joanne has a varied role at Star Actuarial and is responsible for all operational tasks including marketing, advertising, training, hiring, HR, SEO & website, company growth, database management and MI (to name a few). She is involved in everything that is needed behind the scenes to run an efficient and successful recruitment company.

Biography

Joanne graduated from Durham University in 2001 with a 2:1 BA Hons in Business Finance. She then joined Entegria (now Xafinity) as an Actuarial Student specialising in pensions consultancy. In 2004, Joanne moved into recruitment, joining Reed Actuarial. Joanne enjoyed great success during her 7 years at Reed Actuarial and was the most successful permanent recruitment consultant across the whole UK business in 2006 and 2007. She was promoted to Business Manager of the Actuarial team in 2008 and then in 2009 to Area Manager incorporating the UK Actuarial and Banking teams, running two thriving businesses concurrently.

Joanne joined Star Actuarial Futures in January 2012 as Operations Director. Antony Buxton commented “This is a key appointment for us. We are delighted that Joanne has joined Star and confident that she will help us achieve our ambitious objectives for 2012 and beyond.”

As a Director of Scottish Widows Trustees Limited, an Actuarial Manager at Scottish Widows and Partner at Mercer Consulting, Irene has a wealth of experience across the pensions and insurance sectors. She has also been heavily involved with the UK Actuarial Profession, through her membership of Council and a range of committees, some of which she chaired. With this background, Irene works across all sectors of the UK market, and has a deep understanding of the market in Scotland, where she is based. Given her international experience, she also recruits for some specialist international roles.

Biography

Following graduation from Glasgow University, Irene joined Scottish Widows rising to become a senior Pensions Actuarial Manager and Director of Scottish Widows Trustees Limited.

She then moved to Mercer as a Consulting Actuary, becoming a European Partner with additional responsibilities for UK Operational Risk Assessment and Professional Standards in UK and Europe. 

Irene has proven ability to offer high quality professional advice and is well known in the industry having served on Boards and Committees of the UK Actuarial Profession.

She is an experienced presenter and has represented the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries on the Pension Committee of the Groupe Consultatif as well as the IAA, when she chaired two task forces developing actuarial standards for accounting for insurance, pensions, and post-retirement medical liabilities. 

In 2009, Irene became Head of Regulatory Policy at the UK Actuarial Profession, with responsibilities across all areas of actuarial practice before joining Star Actuarial Futures as a Partner in 2010. She is also a member of the Scottish Independent Actuaries.

Irene was the first lady to chair the Scottish Actuaries Club and is a member of the Worshipful Company of Actuaries.

Lance completed his MBA in 2010 and is co-founder of the Southern African Actuarial ConneXion Group (www.saaxgroup.org). As a Partner, he recruits actuaries on a permanent and contract basis specialising mainly within the insurance sector (life, non-life and healthcare).

Biography

Lance graduated from the University of Pretoria (South Africa) in 2003 with a degree in Financial Mathematics. Lance gained valuable actuarial exposure to both the employee benefits and health care industries in South Africa before relocating to London in 2006 to start a career in actuarial recruitment. Lance has enjoyed extensive success recruiting qualified and part-qualified actuarial candidates across various markets, including the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa. Specialising mostly in insurance (life, non-life and healthcare) and recruiting for both permanent and interim roles.

In 2010, Lance took a sabbatical to pursue a Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA) through Edinburgh Business School, and graduated with distinction.

Lance is co-founder of the Southern African Actuarial ConneXion (www.saaxgroup.org), a London-based member interest group for actuaries, bringing together those sharing a common affiliation to southern Africa. The group organises various events with topical speakers during the year, providing excellent networking opportunities, and facilitating and encouraging business between members. With a view to building a strong market presence and maintaining solid industry awareness, Lance is a regular attendee of SA Chamber of Commerce events as well as international actuarial conferences.

Peter is a graduate of Durham University who trained at Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson). He has 12 years of recruitment experience, including eight in actuarial recruitment. Peter joined Star Actuarial Futures in 2012 and since then has worked primarily on London-based investment roles and with major life insurance provider clients.

Biography

Peter graduated from Durham University with a degree in Physics. He spent the first four years of his career as an analyst for Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson) within the retirement practice.

In 2002, he went to work for a major national recruitment group on its financial services desk. In 2008, he moved to specialise in the actuarial sector, working with candidates across life, non-life and pensions, and with a client base of insurance providers, consultancies and investment banks.

He joined Star Actuarial Futures in 2012, bringing his technical expertise and range of client and candidate contacts to the growing team. Since then, Peter has taken up client management responsibilities with a number of large insurance groups and has also worked to strengthen Star's position with its banking and asset management clients.

Peter is a published author. His book, The Jolly Pilgrim, was published in 2011. His work was featured in a number of national and international publications, including two UK broadsheets. Peter has also written for The Actuarial Post and The Actuary - on actuarial career paths and a UK-visa guide for actuaries.

Ivan Clarke

Ivan has over 25 years of experience in executive recruitment, the last 14 of which have been focused exclusively on the Insurance market.

Biography

Ivan has a demonstrable track record of successfully managing senior level Underwriting, Claims, Actuarial and Risk assignments across diverse geographies.

Along with his recruitment activity, Ivan is a regular contributor to the industry press covering topics such as Telematics, Solvency II, Predictive analytics and renewable energy.

In his early career he managed the delivery of a diverse range of senior management and strategic appointments for clients in the technology, media and telecommunications sector working with global software, services and hardware firms, investment banks and strategy firms across Europe with four of those years living and working in Asia.

Paul specialises within the general insurance sector servicing clients across the UK and overseas. In particular, Paul is the main client contact for a number of insurance companies with whom we have enjoyed significant success filling recent vacancies.

Biography

Paul graduated from the University of Sheffield in 1998 with a degree in Law.

With over 9 years’ recruitment experience behind him, Paul’s areas of expertise include permanent and contract recruitment, on both a contingency and retained search and selection basis.

Paul's recruitment experience includes 5 years with a well-known national recruiter managing 5 consultants with responsibility for up to 150 contractors. Prior to joining the team at Star Actuarial he gained experience with a leading actuarial recruiter working with actuaries in the life and general insurance sectors.

At Star Actuarial, Paul focuses on the insurance sector and consulting markets. He works with clients across the UK and further afield with the aim of providing opportunities to actuaries of all levels that will offer them the professional, financial and personal fulfilment they are looking for, and to develop long lasting relationships with clients to ensure that their recruitment needs are met.

Jo has over 13 years of experience recruiting actuaries on both a permanent and contract basis and has a particularly strong network within the life insurance market. Jo combines outstanding relationship building skills with credibility, reliability and strong industry knowledge.

Biography

Jo graduated from the University of Manchester in 1997 with a 2:1 BA (Econ) Hons in Economics and spent her early working years with IBM as part of a successful sales team.  Jo began her career in Actuarial recruitment back in 2001 when she joined The Emerald Group.  After initially working across all disciplines, Jo specialised in the Life market and went on to lead successful Life Divisions for both Emerald and Elliott Bauer. 

Jo returned to The Emerald Group in 2006 where she was instrumental in establishing their Asset Management division, building a new client base and managing a team that became a valued supplier to some of the industry’s key players. 

In 2009, Jo joined the Interim division where she was tasked with growing Emerald’s presence in the Actuarial contract market.  Her commitment to business development and delivery resulted in unprecedented success for the division and Jo secured her place as a trusted and preferred provider of interim resource for many leading insurance companies. 

In March 2015, Jo joined Star Actuarial Futures and is looking forward to contributing to another record-breaking year for the team in 2015.

Jan is a qualified actuary and recruiter with 25 years of experience in the actuarial world. She has worked with clients and candidates from all actuarial sectors and has particular strength in the life, health and longevity markets. Throughout her career Jan has taken on mentoring and coaching roles and she enjoys bringing these skills to her recruitment work in the form of tailored advice and guidance for both clients and candidates.

Biography

After graduating from Southampton University with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering Jan joined the International Division of Eagle Star as a Life Actuarial Trainee, providing support to international branches on a wide range of projects.

In 1993 Jan moved into the reinsurance sector, joining NRG Victory (later GE Frankona Re) in a Pricing and Product Development role.  Initially supporting international business development, after qualifying as an actuary she moved to manage the UK Pricing Team with responsibility for quotations and actuarial support for a portfolio of UK and offshore insurance clients.  Also at whilst at GE Frankona Re Jan took an 18-month secondment to their new Quality team, responsible for embedding GE’s Six Sigma process improvement initiative across their reinsurance businesses. 

Jan moved into actuarial recruitment in 2003, joining the new UK office of Acumen Resources where she enjoyed working with clients from all actuarial sectors on assignments from graduate to Director level.  In December 2014, Jan joined Star Actuarial Futures.  She has enjoyed taking on a broad range of assignments, and particularly developing our presence in the global Life Reinsurance market.

Adam has over 10 years of actuarial and insurance risk recruitment experience obtained across all markets, covering permanent and contract assignments on an exclusive, retained and contingent basis.

Biography

Adam has successfully delivered candidates of all levels to clients in the UK and overseas. Between 2008 and 2012, Adam specialised in the actuarial contractor market where he delivered teams of Solvency II consultants to multiple clients across actuarial, technology, risk, finance and programme management.

Adam joined Star Actuarial’s award-winning team to support the continued growth of the company via the delivery of exceptional candidates to a wide range of industry-leading clients.

Margaret is a Fellow of the Actuarial Profession with almost 20 years' experience working in the pensions and investment markets.

Biography

Margaret has a demonstrable track record of successfully managing, and building, actuarial and investment teams, so is well placed to advise employers on their recruitment needs as well as advising candidates. 

Margaret is a regular contributor to the press having been featured on BBC Daily Politics as well as being a former Editor of The Actuary Magazine.

Clare has over 12 years actuarial recruitment experience. She recruits candidates on a permanent and contract basis all over the UK, in all actuarial sectors, with a particular focus on the life insurance sector.

Biography

Clare has over 15 years of recruitment experience of which 12 have been within the actuarial sector. The early part of Clare’s career was spent working alongside actuaries in a pensions role at Aon.

In 1997 Clare moved into recruitment at Reed. Starting as a consultant, Clare’s success over the years promoted her to Business and Area Manager where she successfully set up and led the specialist actuarial recruitment division. Clare grew this team and the client and candidate database across all actuarial disciplines for both permanent and interim roles offering a contingency, search and retained service.

In 2011 Clare joined Barclay Meade as Head of Actuarial to spearhead their actuarial start-up.

In October 2012 Clare brought a wealth of experience to Star Actuarial with experience and connections across all actuarial sectors.

Biography

Diane graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2003 with a 2:1 in Psychology.

Diane has over 8 years of experience in recruitment across the UK, Ireland & Australia. In 2009, Diane joined a leading actuarial recruiter as a Senior Consultant specialising in the Irish & Scottish market across Life, GI, Pensions & Investments. She was successful in placing numerous actuaries up to Chief Actuary level.

In 2011, Diane relocated to Australia where she recruited senior financial services professionals in Investments, Markets, Business & Relationship management, Process & Change Management for the top banks & financial institutions across the country. 

Having returned to the UK, Diane is excited to continue her actuarial recruitment career with Star Actuarial Futures.

David joined the Non-Life Actuarial Market after graduating from Christ Church Canterbury University with a first class degree. Since then he has built a strong network and excellent reputation across the market, making placements with a number of high-profile companies. He possesses a keen interest in Actuarial practice in General Insurance and works hard to understand the technical requirements of his clients, as well as providing the right cultural match. David is enthusiastic about providing a high-quality, transparent and personable service to clients and candidates alike - aiming to exceed expectations at every stage of the process.

Biography

Sarah graduated with an Upper Second Class Honours degree in Law from Southampton University in 2008, and went on to complete the Legal Practice Course at Guildford College of Law.

Sarah joined the Interim Division of The Emerald Group in 2010, quickly progressing from a Researcher to become a Consultant. Since then, Sarah has built a strong network and a reputation for providing high quality service to both candidates and clients.
