How to Find a Graduate Actuarial Job

Finding a graduate actuarial job can be a challenging process. Nearly 300* students graduate each year from actuarial degrees, making the graduate actuarial market a particularly competitive one. Add to this the demands on your time as a final year actuarial undergraduate (or postgraduate) student, and it is not surprising if you are left wondering when you have time to apply for a job!

If you are an actuarial student close to graduation and are keen to secure a job, the main thing we would advise you to do is apply directly to actuarial firms. Some companies, like the global consultancy firms, have fairly lengthy application processes, with requirements to complete online tests before you are invited to attend an assessment day and interview. The deadlines for applying to such companies are usually early in the year, so if you are looking to be part of next year's September graduate intake, you should really look to start the application process in September this year. All the details you need about the process can usually be found on the company's website.

Other companies have a much simpler application process, where all you need to do is send in a CV and covering letter for them to consider. These companies may not advertise all their vacancies online, so it is always worth writing in just in case they are looking for actuarial resource. A list of companies employing actuaries can be found on the Actuarial Profession's website (http://www.actuaries.org.uk/research-and-resources/documents/directory-actuarial-employers-uk-and-ireland) - this list will also indicate the companies who will accept a covering letter and CV as an application. The list is by no means exhaustive, so do make use of Google!

Finally, although we do not have many actuarial graduate roles, we often do get specific requests from our client companies looking to fill graduate roles quickly. So register your details and CV with us so that we can get in touch if such an opportunity arises but applying directly to companies would still be the best thing to do in the meantime.

We wish you luck in your job search.
